The 15-year figure is a planning benchmark, not a promise. The U.S. Department of Energy uses a 15-year average life for residential air-source heat pumps in life-cycle cost calculations. Dirty filters reduce airflow. Dirty coils make the system run longer and can shorten equipment life, according to ENERGY STAR. A blocked condensate drain can also cause leaks and water damage.

A mini split used for light summer cooling has fewer yearly operating hours than one that heats and cools a home every day. Very hot or very cold climates also push equipment harder. This does not make full-time heat-pump use a bad choice. It simply explains why two identical systems can age differently.

Warranty coverage can help, but warranty length is not the same as service life. Does running a mini split all day wear it out?
