We replaced a 20 year old heat pump with the Mr Cool VersoPro 18K/1.5ton heat pump system. It is incredibly quiet and compact compared to the old system. I was quoted $16k to replace what we had and decided to take a chance on the Mr Cool System. I am about $4k all in so I could replace the entire system twice over and still be saving money. My installation was pretty straight forward with the lineset running outside the house and straight through a wall, and the heat pump being the entire system (no furnace or other aux system). Additional costs were for a transition piece I had fabricated ($55) and a lineset cover ($120).
I removed the evaporator and then the air handler was just light enough for me to lift it into my attic space. The outdoor unit I was easily able to lift and move (rolled on a hand truck and then lifted into place.) The hardest part was snaking the 50 foot lineset up through the entry to the attic, across 20 feet of rafters, through the existing hole (i needed to make larger with a reciprocating saw) and 20 ft down the side of the house. It is very stiff and I was very worried about kinking it but it "unrolled" nicely and seemed very resilient to kinking.
When I got to wiring it up was when I ran into some difficulty. There are quite a few ways the system can be wired (power and comms). I assumed there would be a straight forward intruction on the wiring for a basic system (without all the add-ons or aux systems) but I was incorrect. It took me a few hours and back and fourth scouring the manual and wiring diagrams and seeking out others experiences to confidently turn the power back on and try it out.
I opted to use a 2 wire communication from indoor to outdoor, independent power going to each unit. I set up the thermostat and app and turned it on and everything has been working great. My wife has greatly appreciated the ability to turn up the heat in the morning while she is still in bed!
I would recommend that Mr. Cool or the sites dedicated to the distribution of these systems (like CHILL) put together a better set of instructions for wiring the system and setting the dip switches. For a system that is marketed as DIY I should be able to find straight forward instructions for "this is how you connect the Mr Cool thermostat to the Mr Cool air handler" and "this is how you connect the Mr Cool air handler to the Mr Cool condenser". Once you have that covered THEN provide instruction for more advanced installations.
MRCOOL DIY 5th Gen Multi-Zone 2-Zone 18,000 BTU 24 SEER2 (6K + 6K) Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioner and Heat Pump
Unit was very easy to install and directions were very clear. After install found out that set point on temperature could be plus or minus 5 degrees and that you can’t use the app and remote only one or the other. Had I known those two things I probably would not have purchased the unit.
Doesn’t fit MRCOOL lineset for 2-1/2 Ton or larger (insolated vapor and.liquid). Those require 5” wide minimum. This cover advertises 4.5” and that’s only at the lowest corners, not where a line set would be. So perhaps 4” for this cover. This shouldn’t be on the same suggested items page with an HVAC system if it isn’t compatible. Will be returning it.
Installed in south Texas and it works great. I thought the pre charged lines were well designed and it was easier than I thought to install without a torque wrench which was nice. The insallation took me about 12 hours in total for both rooms

Nice system and easy to install. Good instructions and lots of options with the remote. Thank you!
P.S. And great phone assistance with a few questions I had!
You only need a crescent wrench and a hole saw. Especially with Youtube, this system was easy to set up.
I installed my first unit and am
very happy with the ease of connection of line set to both compressor and head unit. Very nice set up for the DIYer
Happy with this 3 ton mrcool unit as it was easy to install and works great in our cabin
I ordered 2 of these units for 2 small cabins in the TN mountains. Not counting non mini split time, each took between 3 and 4 hours to install.
This was the hottest weekend of the year, and not cabins were chilled in under and hour.
These are the complete DIY bundles. Do yourself a favor, and don't try to save a few bucks by trying extra work with other "almost DIY" configurations. EVerything is in place with this bundle, and the unit is light enough to make it a one person job.
A few tips, if you are using 10 gauge wire, gets some space connectors for your inbound lines. Make connections easy.
Remember to unpack both boxes. One part you need inside is in the outside box 😀
Keep an eye on the drain hose. Kinks easily.
Make sure you have a good circle hole saw.
Spring for the disconnect box and a whip. Beats running conduit.
Figure out if you really need 25' lines and be prepared to have a plan for accommodating the extra.
CHILL sent me exactly what they said they would send. It was on a pallet that the shipper loaded directly into my truck. The only snafu was a missing whip, and CHILL sent that out immediately, so I had it before I was even onsite to install.
Overall a great experience, and many, MR Cool is cool.
will be good to get a 4 ft only extension, I need 16 ft and only option seems to be buying. a complete kit, which makes not much costlier than others.
So far, this is a review of the process of purchasing the mini split since it has not arrived yet. I did have a question about delivery and it was answered promptly. I’ll update this review once I receive and test the unit however, based on the research, I’ve done in the great track record of this device. I’m confident it will remain at five stars.
