Option 1: wall-mounted mini split heads

A wall head is the indoor unit most buyers picture when they hear “mini split.” It contains the coil, blower, filter, louvers, and controls in a cabinet mounted high in the room. Refrigerant piping, communication wiring, and condensate usually pass through or along the wall.
Why wall heads remain the default
- Simple retrofit path: An exterior-wall installation can provide a short route to the outdoor unit and a gravity drain.
- Good service access: Filters, covers, and electronics are generally reachable without opening a ceiling.
- Wide capacity selection: Wall heads are commonly offered across more small and large room sizes than specialty indoor styles.
- Direct airflow control: Adjustable louvers can send air deep into a rectangular room when the head is placed correctly.
- Lower project risk: The installer can inspect the wall and route before committing to extensive ceiling work or ducts.
The tradeoff is visual. A wall head occupies a prominent location and competes with windows, art, cabinetry, and furniture. Air also begins at one point, so the room layout matters. A head aimed into a tall bookcase cannot distribute air as intended.

Option 2: ceiling cassette mini splits

A ceiling cassette recesses most of the indoor unit above the finished ceiling, leaving a grille or panel visible below. “Cassette” is a category, not one universal shape. Some models distribute air in four directions; slimmer one-way models discharge primarily from one side and can fit between common framing layouts.

The hidden questions buyers must answer
What is above the ceiling? Joist direction, spacing, depth, plumbing, wiring, lighting, blocking, trusses, and insulation all matter. Never assume a cassette will fit because the grille dimensions look small. Check the entire chassis and required access area.
How will condensate leave? Cooling creates water. The drain route, lift limitations, slope, trap requirements, overflow protection, and pump provisions are model-specific. A ceiling location makes leak consequences more serious, so service access and drainage are design items—not finishing details.

Option 3: concealed ducted mini split units

A concealed ducted mini split moves the indoor fan coil above a ceiling, in a mechanical space, or within another suitable enclosure. Short supply ducts deliver air to registers, and a return grille sends room air back to the unit. Only the grilles are normally visible.
This approach combines inverter heat-pump equipment with familiar forced-air distribution. It can serve one large zone or, when the equipment and load design permit, a small group of closely related rooms.
Why buyers choose concealed ducted
- Minimal visible equipment: Registers integrate cleanly with the architecture.
- Flexible supply locations: Air can enter near windows, exterior walls, or other load-critical areas.
- One unit can distribute to multiple outlets: This can work well for an adjacent bedroom and bath, a suite, or a defined open zone.
- More filter possibilities: Some ducted units support larger return filters, subject to the unit's allowed static pressure.
The engineering cost of hiding the unit
Ducts create resistance. The blower must move the required airflow through the return, filter, fittings, ducts, and registers without exceeding the unit's external static-pressure capability. Daikin's residential FDMQ, for example, publishes an external static capability up to 0.6 inches of water column; other slim-duct units may allow much less. “It fits in the attic” does not mean it can move air through any duct layout.
Duct location matters too. ENERGY STAR warns that poorly connected residential ducts can lose substantial airflow. Short, sealed, insulated runs inside the conditioned envelope are very different from long flexible ducts stretched through a hot vented attic.
Concealed equipment also needs an intentional service opening, accessible filter, condensate pan and drain strategy, and enough space to remove components. A hidden system without maintenance access is an unfinished design.
Which indoor unit is actually most efficient?
There is no honest one-word winner. The published SEER2 and HSPF2 belong to a certified combination of indoor and outdoor equipment, not to an indoor cabinet shape in isolation. Compare the exact AHRI-rated combinations you are considering.
Installed performance then depends on load matching, airflow, refrigerant-line design, controls, and workmanship:
- A wall head avoids duct leakage but can distribute poorly if obstructed.
- A cassette avoids ducts but adds ceiling and condensate considerations.
- A concealed ducted unit can distribute air exceptionally well, but poor duct sizing, leakage, or insulation can erase that advantage.
For a ducted option, ask for the design airflow, total external static pressure, duct location, sealing method, insulation level, filter pressure drop, and commissioning measurements. Those answers matter more than a promise that the equipment is “high efficiency.”

Often yes, when the manufacturer lists the indoor units as compatible with the same outdoor condenser and approves the combined capacity.
