The 12K model combines 23.5 SEER2, 115V power and a 25-foot precharged R-454B Quick Connect line set, making it especially versatile for a typical bedroom, office or insulated bonus room after a proper load calculation.
It costs more than the value lines, but that buys higher published efficiency, a longer standard connection on common models, stronger cold-weather capability than Easy Pro and access to multi-zone, cassette and Hyper Heat options.

Start here for a garage, guest room, workshop or addition with a simple route and moderate winters. It is a single-zone value line with lower efficiency and less low-temperature reach: MRCOOL lists heating to 5 degrees F, while standard 5th Gen models can reach -13 degrees F depending on model.

Lowest upfront price: MRCOOL DIY Select
DIY Select is the price-first choice. The current family covers 9K through 24K, uses R-454B and includes an 11.5-foot precharged line set. MRCOOL’s one-way OuttaSight cassette is one of the few genuinely DIY-oriented ways to avoid a wall-mounted head. Manufacturer documentation lists 6K, 9K, 12K and 18K cassette sizes and a chassis designed to fit between 16-inch-on-center framing. The panel sits flush, preserves wall space and can be used in compatible single- or multi-zone systems.
The refrigerant connection may be DIY-friendly, but the project is not automatically easier. You still need adequate ceiling depth, a serviceable location, correct structural clearances and a reliable condensate route. The 18K Hyper Heat cassette system is compelling for a cold-climate open room, but a wall mount remains simpler when appearance and wall space are not concerns.
Three decisions matter more than the award
1. Size the room from its load, not square footage alone
Coverage estimates assume favorable conditions. Windows, insulation, leakage, ceiling height, sun and local temperatures change the load. ENERGY STAR recommends proper sizing, and ACCA Manual J is the ANSI-recognized residential standard. Oversizing can hurt humidity control; undersizing can miss design conditions.
2. Confirm voltage, MCA and MOCP before ordering
