FAQ
Yes, but only with MRCOOL’s pre-charged DIY line sets. You cannot use
standard HVAC copper lines, because the MRCOOL DIY system is
designed for their special pre-charged, no-vacuum lines. You can connect
longer or shorter MRCOOL DIY line sets, and extensions, using their
quick-connect fittings.
The DIY kit usually comes with the indoor air handler, outdoor condenser,
one pre-charged line set with control wire, remote, wall sleeve, wall
template, communication cable, drain hose, and mounting hardware. The
main tools you’ll need separately are a drill, level, and basic hand tools.
Measure from the outdoor condenser location to the indoor air handler,
following the actual path the line set will run (including bends, not just
straight distance). MRCOOL DIY line sets come in fixed lengths (16’, 25’,
35’, 50’), so round up to the next size and coil any extra neatly.
Mount the indoor air handler on the provided wall bracket, drill a 3.5" hole
for the lines, run the pre-charged line set, drain, and wire through the hole,
mount the outdoor condenser on a pad or brackets, connect the
quick-connect fittings, plug in the communication wire, and turn on power.
Yes. In general, use about 20–25 BTUs per square foot of conditioned
space. For example, a 550 sq ft room needs ~12,000 BTUs (1 ton). Ceiling
height, insulation, windows, and climate also matter, so sizing calculators or
a load calculation will be most accurate.
The regular 5th Gen DIY allows for longer line sets (up to 75 ft) and has
more flexibility for larger installs. The Easy Pro is a more budget-friendly
version that comes with shorter line sets (16 ft max) and fewer size options,
making it better for small, simple installs.
Hyper Heat systems are designed to provide reliable heating at very low
outdoor temperatures (down to around -13°F) with stronger performance in
cold climates. VersaPro is more of a mid-tier option, offering efficient
heating and cooling, but it doesn’t hold heating output as well in extreme
cold.
Most installs also need a condensate drain line extension, line set cover kit
for a cleaner look, wall mount bracket or pad for the condenser, and
possibly additional line set extensions if your run is longer than the included
length.
You need a 3.5-inch diameter hole. The kit includes a wall sleeve that fits
perfectly in this opening to protect the lines and finish the wall penetration.
The 5th Gen DIY has improved efficiency ratings (higher SEER2), quieter
operation, stronger heating capability in cold weather, and updated
WiFi/smart controls compared to the 4th Gen. It’s essentially a more
refined, higher-performance version. It also uses a new refrigerant R454B
compared to the old one, R-410A.
Yes, MRCOOL DIY Multi-Zone systems allow mixing of ceiling cassettes
and wall-mounted air handlers on the same outdoor condenser, as long as
total capacity does not exceed the unit’s maximum rating.
DIY 5th Gen mini splits heat effectively down to -13°F outdoors. They are
designed for reliable year-round comfort, even in cold northern climates.
MRCOOL offers a 5-year parts warranty and a 7-year compressor warranty
standard, with a limited lifetime compressor warranty if you register the
system online within 60 days of purchase.
