Best DIY Mini Split for Cold Climates: Hyper Heat vs 5th Gen
For most cold-climate DIY buyers, the MRCOOL DIY 5th Gen Hyper Heat is the best pick. MRCOOL rates it to keep heating down to -22°F outside. The standard MRCOOL DIY 5th Gen is rated to -13°F, costs a bit less, and comes in more sizes. Both use pre-charged Quick Connect line sets you can install yourself.
Which MRCOOL DIY mini splits are built for cold weather?
Chill sells two MRCOOL DIY single zone lines that make sense for real winters.
- DIY 5th Gen Hyper Heat. This is the cold-climate model. It comes in 12,000 BTU and 18,000 BTU sizes. MRCOOL's manual lists heat mode from -22°F to 75°F outside.
- DIY 5th Gen. This is the standard model. It comes in 9,000, 12,000, 18,000, 24,000 and 36,000 BTU sizes. MRCOOL's manual lists heat mode from -13°F to 75°F outside.
Both lines use R-454B refrigerant and a 25 ft pre-charged Quick Connect line set. Both carry a 5 year parts and 7 year compressor warranty from MRCOOL.

How low can each one heat?
The big difference is the bottom of the heating range.
- Hyper Heat 12K and 18K: heats down to -22°F
- DIY 5th Gen 9K to 36K: heats down to -13°F
That 9 degree gap matters most in places that see a few nights below -13°F each winter. Below its rated range, a unit's safety controls may shut it off. MRCOOL's manual says this directly.

Keep in mind that "heats down to" does not mean "full power at that temperature." Every heat pump makes less heat as it gets colder outside. MRCOOL's reference chart for the 12K Hyper Heat shows about 11,700 BTU at 5°F and about 6,200 BTU at -22°F. That is on high fan with a 70°F room. MRCOOL notes that most numbers in that chart are simulated, not lab tested. So plan on some backup heat for the coldest nights.
How do the Hyper Heat and 5th Gen compare side by side?
Here are the single zone wall mount systems Chill sells, with MRCOOL's published numbers. HSPF2 Region V is the heating efficiency score for the coldest part of the country. Higher is better.

A few things jump out:
- The 12K matchup is the clearest win for Hyper Heat. It heats 9 degrees lower and scores 8.0 in Region V versus 7.6. The price gap on Chill is $173.
- The 18K matchup is closer. Both score 8.5 in Region V. The Hyper Heat's edge is the lower -22°F rating. The price gap is $264.
- Big rooms only have one choice. Hyper Heat stops at 18K. For 24K or 36K, the standard DIY 5th Gen is the option, with its -13°F rating.
MRCOOL's brochures also list ENERGY STAR V6.1 Cold Climate for both Hyper Heat sizes and for the DIY 5th Gen 9K, 12K, 18K and 24K. The 36K is not listed for Cold Climate. Want to know what SEER2 and HSPF2 mean? See our efficiency ratings guide.
Who should buy the Hyper Heat?
The Hyper Heat fits you best when:
- Your winters drop below -13°F at least a few times a year.
- The room is about 350 to 800 sq ft, so a 12K or 18K fits.
- The mini split will be the main heat for that room.
- You already have, or can add, a 208/230V circuit.
Shop the MRCOOL DIY 5th Gen Hyper Heat collection. The 12K Hyper Heat system and the 18K Hyper Heat system are the wall mount options.
Who should buy the standard DIY 5th Gen?
The standard DIY 5th Gen fits you best when:
- Your coldest nights stay above -13°F.
- You want a 115V unit. Only the 9K and 12K run on 115V.
- You need more than 18,000 BTU in one space.
- You have a furnace or boiler as backup and want the mini split to carry most of the load.
Shop the MRCOOL DIY 5th Gen collection, or start with the 12K 115V system.
What about the 12K: 115V or 230V?
This is a common snag. The standard 12K runs on 115V. The 12K Hyper Heat runs on 208/230V. Both need their own circuit, and MRCOOL calls for a licensed electrician to do the wiring. Check your panel before you pick. Our 115V vs 230V guide walks through breakers and wire size.
How do you get the most heat in a cold climate?
- Size for your coldest week. Use our BTU sizing guide, the mini split sizing calculator, or the Manual J calculator.
- Keep the outdoor unit out of snow. MRCOOL says to take steps against ice buildup where snow is expected. Its manual also allows mounting the outdoor unit on a wall bracket. See our placement guide.
- Run the drain hose straight down. MRCOOL warns that slow water can freeze in the hose.
- Install before the deep cold. Our fall and winter install guide covers working in cool weather.
