Each room can use the indoor-unit style that fits it best. The important part is that every component uses the same 5th Generation R-454B platform and that the complete BTU combination appears on MRCOOL’s current matchup chart.
For example, a bedroom may work best with a wall mount while a living room with limited wall space may be a better fit for a ceiling cassette. You do not have to use the same indoor-unit style in every zone.
What “mix and match” really means

A multi-zone system uses one outdoor condenser to power several indoor air handlers. Each indoor unit creates its own zone with a separate temperature setting and fan control. The indoor units share the outdoor unit’s available heating or cooling capacity.
MRCOOL’s current 5th Generation matchup chart states that approved air handlers may be ceiling cassettes or wall-mounted units. That means a listed combination such as 9K + 12K can use two wall mounts, two cassettes, or one of each when the exact indoor models are compatible.
The chart approves capacity combinations, but that is not the only check. Model generation, refrigerant, pipe size, available condenser ports, line-set limits, and installation requirements must also match.

- Enough condenser ports: A “four-zone” condenser describes the maximum number of indoor units, not a promise that every possible four-head combination works.

- Drain plan: Every indoor unit needs its own approved condensate route.

What is different about installing a ceiling cassette?

The MRCOOL DIY 5th Generation one-way ceiling cassette is designed to fit between framing spaced 16 inches on center. It does not require a walk-in attic, but it does require a clear ceiling bay with enough width, length, and depth.
Before choosing a cassette, confirm:
- The joists run in the cassette’s long direction
- No beam, pipe, duct, wire, light, or fire blocking occupies the space
- The visible panel and filter can be reached for service
- The one-way air outlet can blow across the open part of the room
- The refrigerant line and communication cable can reach the condenser
- The condensate discharge route follows the manual
Never cut a joist, truss, or manufactured I-joist without an approved structural plan. Moving the cassette to another bay is normally safer than changing structural framing.

The cassette already has a condensate pump
The MRCOOL DIY 5th Generation ceiling cassette has a built-in condensate pump. A separate external pump is not normally needed. However, the built-in pump does not remove the need for drain tubing and an approved discharge point.
The drain still has model-specific lift, slope, and support limits. Plan the route before cutting the ceiling. Do not discharge water where it can damage siding, create ice on a walkway, or leak into a hidden cavity.
A wall-mounted air handler normally works best with a simple downhill gravity drain. That is one reason a wall mount can be easier in a bedroom or exterior-wall location.
Does mixing head styles change condenser sizing?

No, the style of indoor unit does not replace the BTU and matchup rules. Start with a heating and cooling load for each room. Then choose the head style. Finally, select an outdoor condenser that accepts the full group.
Do not add all indoor-unit labels and assume that total is the system’s simultaneous output. MRCOOL states that when all connected indoor units run at once, their combined output will not exceed the outdoor condenser’s rating. The available capacity is shared.
That matters in homes where every room needs maximum heat at the same time. A 12K head does not guarantee 12,000 BTU of output during every multi-zone operating condition.

Can each room have a different temperature?
Yes. Each indoor unit has its own setpoint and fan control. You can keep a bedroom cooler than the living room or turn down an unused space.
However, standard multi-zone heat-pump systems normally share one operating mode. One room cannot call for cooling while another calls for heating at the same time. If rooms often need opposite modes because of sun exposure, fireplaces, or computer equipment, several single-zone systems may be a better design.
What arrives, and what is usually separate?

- Controls and communication cables included with the selected equipment
Depending on the configuration, you may still need a condenser pad or bracket, disconnect, electrical whip, surge protector, drain extensions, line-set covers, couplers, fasteners, and other installation materials. Confirm the “What’s included” section on every bundle or component page.
MRCOOL’s pre-charged connections remove the normal vacuuming and refrigerant-charging step when installed as directed. They do not remove local permit, electrical, structural, or drainage requirements. Use a licensed electrician when required or when you are not qualified to install the dedicated circuit and disconnect.
Can you replace a wall mount with a cassette later?
Possibly, but do not treat the air handlers as plug-and-play accessories. The replacement must be compatible with the condenser, BTU combination, refrigerant, pipe size, and controls. The new location also needs a workable line-set and drain route.
Changing a connected air handler may require refrigerant-service procedures and new installation materials. Confirm the plan with MRCOOL or a qualified HVAC technician before disconnecting equipment.
A practical mixed system example
Imagine a three-zone plan with an open living room and two bedrooms:
- Living room: A ceiling cassette keeps the main walls open and blows along the room.
- Bedroom 1: A wall mount provides easy filter access and a short exterior-wall route.
- Bedroom 2: Another wall mount avoids opening the finished ceiling.
This layout can work if the three room loads produce an approved capacity combination for the chosen condenser. The installer must also verify all three line-set lengths, pipe sizes, drains, and the ceiling cassette’s framing space.
